CHAPTER ELEVEN

* * *

CHAUNCY

Our dinners in or at their family’s restaurant, a glass of wine out on the patio each night, talking, reminiscing, and then falling asleep in each other’s arms had become a welcomed routine. Life had become hectic the last few years, and having this normalcy was something I hadn’t realized I missed.

Kietra turned and lay on her side, her fingers raked gently through my hair, and her soft breasts pressed against my arm and chest. In a matter of seconds, the endorphins flooded my system, and my entire body relaxed. The dull throbbing in my shoulder after today’s strenuous therapy felt near non-existent. When I had said she was the only medicine I needed, I meant it.

And when she looked at me with those hooded eyes, I knew she would give me anything I asked. Fuck, how I wanted to ask, but what I didn’t want was for Kietra to look back on this night and think our being together again was only about sex.

It wasn’t.

It never had been because she had always owned my heart.

I squeezed her closer, her fingers flirting with the short strands at my temple as a lazy smile played on her lips. “Remember the first time you did this for me?”

“Uh-huh,” she said soothingly. “It was the first time Coach tore your head off for missing practice, thinking you were skipping so you could be with your girl.”

“What an asshole.” I chuckled.

I had locked my keys in my truck and knew my dad kept the spare in the safe at the pharmacy our family owned. So, I went there to get them and ended up being there when some mangy-looking guy came in and robbed us at gunpoint.

I was terrified—for so many reasons that day.

“At least Coach apologized,” she reminded me.

“Only after he saw the evening news and realized I was telling the truth.”

“Well, to be fair, it was kind of farfetched. I mean, what were the chances?”

“I guess you can never be too careful.”

That was a one-time incident. Merlot was still a safe place to live.

“That was such a horrible day—”

“Not the whole day,” I reminded her.

After everything that had happened that day, all I wanted was my girl. Somewhere around ten that night, I passed my parents sitting on the couch. I didn’t even bother asking permission or lying to them. Told them I was headed to Kietra’s and walked right out the door.

“I remember.” Her voice was soft and nostalgic. “We snuck into the wine tasting room and snuggled on the couch in my dad’s office, your head in my lap and my fingers running through your hair. We talked for hours before we fell asleep. Thank God, Nora found us before my dad showed up.” Her expression was soft. “That was the first time you told me you loved me.”

Feeling the emotions that day brought on, I said, “I couldn’t go another moment without you not knowing.” Not after what had happened. It killed me to think I could have lost my life and she never would have known how I felt about her.
